Social Security

Social Security has been our nation’s most successful domestic initiative, lifting millions of Americans out of poverty. Since its inception in 1935, Social Security has protected workers and their families against the loss of income associated with old age, death or disability. It guarantees a life-long, inflation-adjusted defined benefit that families can rely on and never outlive. It guarantees seniors that they will not have to live out their golden years without hope.

Social Security represents the values of hard work and community that Americans across the country hold dear. It is the fulfillment of our nation's promise that if you work hard and follow the rules, you will be rewarded for your lifetime of work with a secure retirement.

I strongly oppose any plan to privatize Social Security. Social Security is an American success story. It is the foundation of all our retirement security. It is a guarantee – not a gamble. Now more than ever, as Americans face job losses, failing pension plans, and rising health care costs, we need the security of Social Security.

I am willing to work hand in hand with anyone who wants to start a genuine, bipartisan, honest debate on saving Social Security. But I strongly oppose plans that take the security out of Social Security.

Our senior citizens have rightly been called America’s greatest generation because their hard work has enabled us to enjoy the most prosperous time in the history of God’s creation. I will continue to work to honor their sacrifices by defending their retirement security.
